Crossness Pumping Station
Steam engines slumber in gilded iron, awakened by laughter and brass.
Nicknamed the 'Cathedral on the Marshes', this Victorian sewage pumping station is a riot of ironwork and tiling. Built in 1865 and abandoned in 1953, it was rescued by volunteers who now open it for 'Steaming Days', guided tours and special events. Visitors wander through echoing engine halls, admire restored beam-engines and catch concerts or steampunk fairs amid the ornate rusted columns. It's grand, gritty and gloriously out of time.
