St Sarkis Armenian Church

Incense curls through a domed nave; Armenian hymns drift beyond the garden walls.

Tucked into Iverna Gardens, St Sarkis is the only church in England built in a traditional Armenian style. Philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian funded its construction in 1922-1923 as a memorial to his parents, drawing inspiration from the 13th-century bell-tower of Haghpat Monastery. It serves as the seat of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the UK and offers liturgy every Sunday. The warm stone interior and carved khachkars make this a piece of Armenia in London.
